Khais Itao

Khais Itao

He is a local indigenous artist born and raised in Ofafina Village in the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea.

Raised by his beloved grandfather, Khais was exposed to art from a young age as his grandfather used clay and pit-pit (tall thin shrubs that grow by the river) to create sculptures.

Eventually Khais started school and went on to attend arts school in Port Moresby from 1979 to 1982. Now an established artist, Khais specializes in painting, pencil and ink drawing, his artwork reflects the traditions and culture of PNG. Cultures that in some cases are slipping away. His art is imbued with stories and history.

In this tropical environment where the majority of the inhabitants live largely traditional village lifestyles in agricultural societies – painting has been a creative outlet that Kais has used to express his awe and admiration for the rugged landscape that is Papua New Guinea.

Now with six children of his own, he also gleans inspiration from his family, the local people and elders who live around him.
Khais’ goal is to become a successful artist so he can provide materially for his family and support others who hope to pursue the same line of work.
